PHEV Engine Overview: Everything You Need To Know About PHEV SUVs and EV

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, also known as PHEV, is the future of automobiles and we're ecstatic to join the new trend by electrifying the Range Rover using PHEV engines. PHEV combines our lightweight Ingenium engine and 85kW electric motor, along with a large 13 kWh capacity battery which is charged with an external source. In EV mode, the PHEV delivers up to 51km from a full charge with impressive zeroCO2 tailpipe emissions.

PHEV delivers an output of 398 hp, and CO2 emissions from 64g/km, using the combination of an advanced 2.0-litre 296 hp Si4 Ingenium gas engine and a high capacity 85kW electric motor.

PHEV delivers a virtually silent drive in full electric vehicle (EV) mode and ensures a smooth transition between the gas engine and electric motor.

You can choose from Parallel Hybrid mode (the default driving mode) which combines gas and electric drive or the full electric drive of EV (Electric Vehicle) mode.

PHEV is precise and uncompromising and is fully capable of handling off-road situations such as wading and rock crawl.

Four Types of Electric Vehicles

There are four types of electric vehicles currently in the market:

Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV)

MHEV is a mild hybrid system that harvests and stores energy normally lost during vehicle deceleration and intelligently redeploys it to assist the engine. MHEV incorporates an enhanced the Stop/Start system that enables the engine to shutdown while the vehicle decelerates to a stop. These capabilities improve vehicle fuel economy.

Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV)

A Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) charges its battery via regenerative braking powered by a conventional engine with an electric motor and battery pack

Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)

A Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) is charged from an external power supply. More, PHEV uses regenerative braking to seamlessly selects and blends the engine and electric motor to deliver optimum performance and efficiency.

Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV)

A Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) is powered solely by an electric motor with a battery and recharged using a plug-in charge point, delivering permanent pure electric vehicle driving. Charged from an external power supply and using regenerative braking, a BEV achieves zero tailpipe emissions.

Home Charging

There are different ways you can charge your electric vehicle - the ideal method would be home charging via a home charging cable.

The home charging cable enables you to charge the vehicle overnight using a domestic power socket. Where more flexible or faster EV charging solutions are required, optional charging solutions including an A/C wall charger can be installed.

Our PHEV range can fully charge from either a domestic socket or an IEC connector. It's ideally suited to charge overnight, fully recharging in 14 hours, enabling emissions free commuting for up to 51km. Installing and using a wall charger will reduce charging times to just 2.75 hours.

Here are four types of EV charging equipment you can use:

Home Charging Cable - Standard

All Land Rover PHEV vehicles come with a Home Charging Cable (Mode 2 Charging Cable). The cable connects to domestic sockets and supports a charging time of 14 hours. The cable can be used in all weather conditions.

Multi-Function Charging Cable - Accessory

You can fully charge your EV in 2.75 hours using the accessory Multi-function Charging Cable (Mode 2 Universal Charging Cable) and a dedicated wall box. The interchangeable adapter allows you to use the cable abroad, through a regional specific two- or three-pin plug variant.

Public Charging Cable - Accessory

The Public Charging Cable (Mode 3 Charging Cable) enables you to connect with AC charging stations. The cable is compatible with a home wall box, which a Land Rover approved supplier can install at your home.
